DOES CUSSING REALLY OFFEND YOU? Don’t Miss The Big Picture From Small Picture Thinking

YOU SAY THAT MY CUSSING IS OFFENSIVE? GOOD THAT’S THE POINT.

When I first partnered with Ryan Stewman I had countless conversations with people about how I should really do my research on his style. He uses foul language and openly admits smoking marijuna. My “Brand” has always been that of suits, ties, fancy houses, luxury cars, exotic trips, ect.

Ryan’s brand is that of v-necks, tatoos, cussing, and doing what ever the fuck he wants. We couldn’t be more different in our personal branding. I started off selling for Ryan before we became business partners I learned that 99% of the people I was on the phone with that joined our program did so because they felt Ryan was real and they could relate to him. The didn’t want a fake ass coach that pretended to be something he wasn’t.

A lot of times a coach also plays the role of therapist. You can’t open up to a therapist if you can’t relate to them, you can’t trust them, or you think they are not REAL. I began to dismiss people and try to explain to them that I see why he does it from the inside, IT WORKS.

Here’s the really cool part. “IT WORKS” not because he forces a cuss word or an edgy topic. “It Works” because It’s who he is. I then learned from Garrett J White the meaning and POWER behind being REAL – RAW- and RELEVANT – to get bad ass RESULTS.

Fast forward to today and I am now a coach and mentor myself and I am having conversations about my cussing. People say that it could cost me a corporate speaking engagement or that it looks like I am adopting Ryan’s brand. The truth is I was first attracted to Ryan because I could relate. When I get passionate or excited I tend to drop a cuss word or two. I don’t force is but if I feel it I don’t filter it…WHY? Because the filter isn’t natural. To Replace FUCKING with FREAKING doesn’t feel natural to me. To say DARN IT when I am pissed rather than saying DAMMIT isn’t real. NOW don’t mistake me for being an idiot. I know my audience. If I am a guest speaker on someone else’s stage or someone else’s show I will respect their audience. As for my channel, my audience, my stage, and my programs you can bet your ass we are going to keep it REAL.

Q: What’s your process for vetting clients? What questions or things do you look out for?

Answer #1 – Do you have enough money?
Answer #2 – What I’m really looking for, to not make a joke, is are they creative? The #1 thing I’m scared of is, we have a ton of creativity and we can do a ton of REAL work but people want to follow a very strict process of how they’ve always done it versus how they’re supposed to do it, I’m petrified in that. Really there’s no way to do it because everyone says they want to be innovative and do the new thing and invest in the future but then you get into practicality and the first thing that’s cut is the future which is why so many people lose. Everybody’s into defense instead of offense when things get tough. For me, when times get tough, you go harder. Anyway, I’m trying to sniff out if people have the stomach to be innovative and do things differently to take some risks but be practical and have a little more patience for that practicality and that ROI to present itself.

Q: How the FUCK do you say FUCK so many times on stage and not get any FUCKING flak for it?

A: I think the reason I get away with dropping the f-bomb is #1, I mean it when I say it. There’s no tactic, I’m just in the zone. I was inspired by Richard Pryor, Chris Rock and Eddie Murphy and their styles have translated to my keynotes styles. I feel like I do a little bit of a stand-up timing process and I think that because I’m not forcing it and because it’s my natural zone with a little “Jersey-boy action”, people respect authenticity. The other reason I’m able to get away with it is because I don’t care if I receive flak. As a matter of fact, I use the f-bomb to vet people. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. This is a platform for me, for the hardcore last 7 years for me to go one layer deeper into things I’ve never said before. I actually use my f-bomb to vet other people. I actually react to the way you’re reacting to my f-bomb because if you are a person who is so thrown off by using the f-bomb in public, in a public setting, with a keynote that you’re not looking at a big enough picture for me. You’re judging me? I’m judging you. So if you are incapable of getting over that and seeing the bigger statement that I’m creating, then you’re not going to be someone that I want to do business with, invest in or take on as a client because you’re at this micro-level and that’s not a place where I want to play.
